Appearence
The Spathiphyllum has glossy, dark green, oval-shaped leaves with a distinct ribbed surface and white flowers. The plant produces white or greenish-white flowers that resemble calla lilies. The flowers are made up of a large white petal-like spathe that surrounds a central cream-colored spadix. The spathe is elliptical or lanceolate and can be 4 to 12 inches long. The spadix is shorter than the spathe and contains the male and female flower parts.
Indoor and Outdoor Use
Spathiphllum thrive in humid shady positions. These plants can tolerate low light levels, but prefer at least medium light. Direct sunlight should be avoided. If in dry rooms, you can mist leaves to increase humidity. Keep plant away from cold drafts and windows. Spahiphyllum prefer temperatures above 21'C.
Growth Habit
Spathiphyllum leaves grow directly from the soil and can reach up to 25 inches long. The growth habit of a Spathiphyllum, also known as a Peace Lily, is clumping, with leaves and flowers. Peace Lilies can have a compact, upright, or vase-shaped growth habit. The size of a Peace Lily depends on the variety, the largest being the Sensation which can grow to a whopping 1m tall by 1m wide when mature.
Care and Maintenance
The plant requires low maintenance and average water needs. Place in a bright area with indirect light. While they can tolerate low light, they may not bloom as much. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers. Feed with a diluted liquid fertiliser every month during the growing and blooming seasons. Peace lilies are sensitive to chemical fertilisers, so organic options are best. Dust or wipe leaves regularly to help them photosynthesize.
